Royal Navy Settlers

Thomas Jameson was born in Cumberland, February 1745, and qualified as a naval surgeon in 1777. Appointed surgeon's mate of HMS Sirius in 1786, he accompanied the first settlers to Norfiolk Island. His first son, Thomas, was born on the island to Elizabeth Colley. He left the Colony in 1800 only to return in August 1802 as chief surgeon in place of William Balmain. In1804, with the help of fellow surgeons John Harris and John Savage, he carried out the first smallpox vaccinations in the colony. Because Governor Bligh had removed him from a magistracy, Jameson was one of those involved in Bligh's overthrow. In June 1809 he returned to England to act as witness for Colonel Johnson into Bligh's deposition. Jameson died in London on 27 Janaury 1811. He left a widow, Rebecca, seven daughters and two sons. In his will, Jameson provided an annuity for his son Thomas by Elizabeth Colley.
