Royal Navy Settlers

 

Owen Cavernough was born at Gosport in 1762 and was sailor on HMS Sirius of the First Fleet. he accompanied Captain Phillip on the first expedition from Botany Bay to Port Jackson. He first settled on Norfolk Island and married Margaret Darnell and had two daughters. He returned to Sydney in January 1796. He received a grant of 100 acres at Mulgrave Place in 1803. He drowned on the Hawkesbury in 1841 leaving six children.

James Coventry was a sailor on HMS Sirius of the First Fleet and worked a plot of ground at Garden Island after the Fleet arrived at Sdyney Cove. In May 1788, he was convicted with another marine fo the manslaughter of a fellow sailor. Because he was sick with scurvy, he could only bear part of his 500 lashes. He drowned at Norfolk Island in August 1790.

James Cunningham was a master's mate on HMS Sirius of the First Fleet. He sailed with King and the first settlers to Norfolk Island in February 1788 and found the landing sites at the Island. He drowned while landing stores fronm HMS Supply in August 1788.
