Royal Navy Settlers

 

Henry Lidgard Ball was commander of HMS Supply, First Fleet. In January 1788, he assisted the French, La Perouse, to enter Botany Bay. In February 1788, he conveyed the first settlers to Norfolk Island and during that voyage he discovered and named Lord Howe Island and Ball's Pyramid.. He was appointed Captain in 1789 by Governor Phillip. He retruned to England in Novemeber 1791 carrying the first live kanagaroo to be seen in England and left behind a daughter Anne Marie to a convict woman, Sarah Partridge. He died in England on 22 October 1822 a retired Rear Admiral. Mount Lidgbird at Lord Howe Island, Ball's Bay at Norfolk Island and Ball's Point in Sydney Harbour are all named after him.

William Balmain was born in Perthshire Scotland in February 1762. He joined the Navy in 1780 as a surgeon's mate and sailed to the Colony on the Alexander as an assistant surgeon to the colony on the First Fleet in Janaury 1788. Balmain was appointed chief surgeon of the colony in August 1796. Between 1794 and 1797, he received several grants of land exceeding 750 acres in all. In 1797, he was living with Margaret Dawson and a daughter Jane was born that year. Balmain returned to England in 1801 and died on 17 November 1803, leaving his estate to his wife Margaret Dawson and his three chldren who were at that time living in England. The Sydney suburb of Balmain was named after him.

John Bates was a Marine mason who sailed with the First Fleet. He was transferred from HMS Sirius to the colony and set to work on the construction of public buildings in May 1788. He was paid extra wages for this duty. In July 1790, he was drowned when the boat he was fishing in was overturned by a whale in Sydney Harbour.

Daniel Bear was a bosun on HMS Sirius of the First Fleet. Stranded on Norfolk Island when the Sirius was wrecked in March 1790, he drowned there later in August 1790.

Jonathan Bell was a sailor on HMS Sirius of the First Fleet. He died several months after arrival on 29 July 1788.

David Blackburn was master of HMS Sirius under Commander Henry Ball on the First Fleet. He returned to England in 1792. Blackburn Island near Lord Howe Island is named after him. In 1789, he surveyed the north shore of Sydney Harbour and named Neutral Bay as a safe anchorage.

Henry Brewer joined the Navy as a volunteer in 1778 and joined HMS Sirius as a midshipman in orderr to act as Captain Phillip's clerk. Prior to departure on the First Fleet, he was appointed provost marshall in May 1787. He died in Sydney in July 1796.

Walter Brody, an armourer and blacksmith on HMS Sirius on the First Fleet. he went back to England in 1792 only to return in 1793 and resume his employment as blacksmith. He was granted 30 acres at Lane Cove and was employed as blacksmith until 1800 when he was discharged for drunkendness and neglect of duty.
