John Harrison, inventor of the first practical chronometer, petitioned Lord Anson for sea trials of his H3 and H4 timepieces. Harrison tested his H1 chronometer in HMS Centurion in May 1736 and was awarded finance to develop his invention. The work of Harrison contributed to the success of Cooks voyages of exploration. |
