History of Greene County,
Pennsylvania
WILLIAM HOUSTON, deceased, who was a farmer and
stock-grower
by occupation, was born in Ireland
in 1791. When twelve years of age he
came to America and
settled in
Washington County, Penn.,
where he learned the shoemaker’s trade and followed it as a business
until he
came to Greene County
in 1836, and bought the farm in Aleppo Township
which is still
in possession of the family. Here he
died in 1854. In 1820 Mr. Houston
married Esther, daughter of Captain James Dickey, of Washington County, Penn. Their
family consisted of seven children,
three of whom are living. They are W.
D., a carpenter and contractor; Samuel, a carpenter and farmer; and
Joseph. The last two mentioned were
soldiers of the late war, in Company H, Fifteenth Pennsylvania
Volunteer
Cavalry. The family are highly respected
in the community in which they live.
