Initially private Schools provided the only education, then under the Education Act 1877 the present State School System began (free compulsory education).

The first private schools were
· In a tent at Shortland
· One in Sandes Street (Mr McKee)
· One by the present Bowling Club (Mr Jones)
· One at the School of Mines Site (Mr Fletcher)
· Waiokaraka Flat (Mr Robinson)
· Punga Flat (Mr Bestee, Mr Brown, Mr Horgan)
· Convent School
· Higher Degrees at St George's Church School, Rolleston Street (Mr Schofield) and Pollen Street (Mrs Fleetwood)
