children sailed on the "Swiftsure" leaving Melbourne on 5 February 1864

and they arrived in New Zealand on 22 February 1864.(another source says

General Notes (Husband)

STEPHEN EARLE

"Stephen Earle was born in Bungay, Suffolk, England on 6 June 1830. He

immigrated to Australia when a young man and married Eliza Redgen in 1855 at

Geelong, Australia.

On 1 September 1863, he joined the 1st Regiment of the Waikato Militia in

Melbourne and sailed on the “Star of India” to New Zealand. He arrived in

Auckland about two weeks later. He was posted to No 5 Company of the Regiment.

He later joined the Imperial 18th Foot Regiment.

His wife and six children sailed on the “Swiftsure” leaving Melbourne on 5

February 1864 and they arrived in New Zealand on 22 February 1864.

The children were, Edward 7, Sarah 5, Fred 5, Matilda 4, Walter 2 and Elizabeth

Stephen was involved with the Imperial Commissariat Transport Corps that was

employed in moving supplies into the Waikato to support General Cameron’s

forces in the New Zealand Maori wars.

The family must have been living at Bombay (Otahuhu?) as both Walter and

Elizabeth died and are buried there according to the Earl family history.

However, the death certificate for Elizabeth says she died at Otahuhu. Walter

died in 1864 and Elizabeth died in 1865. At this time, no trace of the graves

of these two children has been found.

Another child was born in Auckland and this was Stephen. He was born on 20

September 1865. After Stephen came Eliza, 24 January 1868, Charlotte, 18

December 1869, Mary Anne 6 June 1871, John Walter, 9 August 1873, Ada Grace, 28

March 1875, George Alfred, 23 November 1876, Fredrick, 4 July 1878 and Ellen,

19 September 1879. As Eliza Earle was born in Tauranga the family must have

shifted from Bombay to Tauranga between 1865 and 1868.

Stephen Earle was at the battle of Gate Pa in Tauranga on 28 April 1864 but the

family was still in Bombay (Otahuhu?) at that time.

Stephen Earl is listed on the electoral roll for East Cape from 31/8/1872 to

1/9/1880. He has freehold, lots 5 and 42 at Greerton in Tauranga.

On the electoral roll for Tauranga from 1880 to 1884 he is listed on the

electoral roll as having 50 acres freehold at Aongatete in the parish of Te

Apata. It was lot 146.

Details of his military service can be found in Archives New Zealand,

Wellington under file AD32/2703.

Details of his New Zealand medal are as follows.

1st Regiment Waikato Militia. Earle Stephen, private No 5 Company. (Joined

Melbourne 1/9/1863.) Also 18th Foot. Also Imperial Commissariat Transport

Corps. Born 1843, England. Farmer. Arrived aboard Star of India ex Melbourne.

Died 7/8/1932. Tauranga. Gazette 1871. AD32/2703. (Imperial issue)."
