General Notes (Husband)

Their last known address in England, which was found in
James HARDMAN'S family
bible was Poke Lane, Whittington, near Litchfield, in
Staffordshire.
Came to New Zealand with 2nd Battalion in 1860 on the
"Robert Lowe".
Married Mary Palmer in 1862 at the residence of Mr & Mrs
Gleeson.
He arrived in Auckland 28 Nov 1860 with the 2nd Battalion of the 14th
Regiment, about 500 foot soldiers, on the "Robert Lowe"
under the command of
Lieu Colonel Sir J E Alexander, and was stationed at
Auckland.
Previous to leaving Ireland he was stationed at Mullinger
and Cavagh Camp and
was paid one penny a day. At the 30 Sep 1861 he was
stationed at Camp Otahuhu
and between 1 Oct and 31 Dec he was moved to
"Pokinhoe" (sic) probably
Pokeno.
During the period of 1 April 1862 - 30 Jun 1862 he seems to
have spent a day in
hospital, either Regimental or General. Also during this
time he was married-
22 April 1862.
He was discharged 7 Sep 1868. Regimental No 221. In a List
of Officers and
Soldiers entitled to the New Zealand Medal (2nd Batt 14th
Regiment) his rank is
shown as Private. It reads:- Employed on Active Service in the
Field from Jan 1861 including either the Waitara Campaign
and Actions; Waikato
Campaign and Actions of Koheroa, Paparata; Wanganui Campaign
and Actions of
Rutuki, Patahi, Otapawa or Waikoko.

In the "Thames Reunion Book" 1913, they ask for
people who are classed as early
settlers and J Hardman is recorded as coming to Thames in
1867. Page 7.
Death entry details gave his length of time in NZ as 49
years.
