“SUDDEN DEATH
Yesterday morning, Mr Clementine A. Cornes, aged 62 years, a
well-known mining
prospector, died suddenly at the Thistle Hotel, Queen
Street. The deceased had
been staying at the hotel since last Saturday, and up till
yesterday appeared
to be enjoying good health.
During the morning, however, he became suddenly
ill, and Dr. Grant was called in a little after nine
o'clock, but the deceased
expired shortly after the doctor's arrival. The late Mr.
Cornes, who leaves a
wife and large family, had been identified with the mining
industry in various
parts of the Auckland district for a great many years. He
was one of the oldest
and best known prospectors of the Hauraki Peninsula, and was
identified with
the mining industry at Thames, Ohinemouri, and Coromandel
for a number of years.
Recently he disposed of his interest in the Kapanga mine at
Coromandel, of
which he was part owner. The deceased had served in the
Maori war during 1863
and 1864, having been one of Major Jackson's Forest
Rangers. He was present at
the battle of Rangiaohia and several other engagements. Mrs Cornes and family
reside at Waihi. An
inquest will be held at half-past ten this morning at the
Thistle Hotel.”
