Commenced his own Engineering business in Thames in 1869. Went back on the "Percy" with 2 sons on 3 May 1869. He had heard about the Gold in Thames. When Richard and his family arrived in Auckland on the "Gertrude" in 1863. He brought with him what looked like a load of junk which he put together on the wharf. It was a steam powered canoe which he launched upon the Waitemata much to the amazement of the Natives. During the Maori Wars the army commandeered the "Gymnotus" and used it on the Waikato River shooting through the portholes. Later it was used as a ferry on the Waikato River. A Mr Bach ? which is recorded in Auckland Provincial Gazette: regarding the "Cock-a-doodle Gold mining Company, "I hereby declare a first and final payment of three shillings and ninepence halfpenny in the pound to all creditors proved in the above named Company, payable at Mr Bach's Pollen Street, Grahamstown on and after the twenty-fifth day of March next. ================================================================================ General Notes (Wife) ================================================================================ Was a very gifted Pianist. All the family except Thomas and Harriet returned to England in 1867. Returned to New Zealand with her daughters on "Countess of Kintore" on 4 October 1870 and joined her husband and sons in Thames.
