Iron Mines of Alleghany County

To provide raw materials for the iron furnaces of Alleghany County, various iron mines were opened, mined and closed between 1800 and 1930.  These mines are mentioned in historical information about the furnaces.  This page will include current photographs of the remains of these iron mines.

At least five mines are identified on this map.

Iron Mountain Mines - these mines are located on the gravel road that continues east towards Clifton Forge on Route 625.  I have located one mine so far.  It is located 5 miles from the road behind Cucci's on the right hand side of the road.  The entrance is easier to see when returning  west towards Dolly Ann.  Here are the photographs from this first mine.  I will refine this when I have more time.  The GS Map shows a number of mines on the side of the hill to south.  Now that I have more detail hopefully I will find more.
