Falling Springs
Some friends are walking in the foreground of the picture. This give you
an idea of the scale of the falls from the bottom. I think we estimated it
at about 75 feet.
Location : public land near Covington, western Virginia
-
Height : 150 feet
-
River/Stream : Fallingwater Creek
-
Water Levels : moderate , best time to view falls is winter to early
summer
-
Photographs : none
-
Description : With its unique freefalling 150 foot plunge off of an
overhanging ledge, this waterfall is unique among the East Coasts sliding
and cascading waterfalls. The spring-fed cascade is not particularly wide
or powerful as it falls off of a slightly convex ledge but the misty plunge
on to the rocks below is worth viewing. These spectacular and photogenic
falls are viewed from an overlook on the road which makes them easily and
quickly viewed although not particularly peaceful.
-
How to Find It : Although it is possible to make your way down to
the bottom of the falls along an unmarked trail next to the parking lot,
its probably easiest and just as effective to walk a short distance
up the road to the overlook at which it is in the perfect location to view
the entire falls. Total hike : .1 miles over pavement.
-
Safety Considerations : high cliffs, speeding cars
-
Driving Directions : Take exit 16 on I-64 on to north US-220. US-220
goes through Covington and, after 9.3 miles, turn left into the parking lot.
Shortly before the parking lot is a sign marking the turnoff. Make sure not
to follow signs to the town of Falling Spring however.
