that does not get away from the fact of my remark, ‘that the Federal
Government had driven out foreigners to bring others (Italians) in’… And
he says again the kanaka is not any more undesirable than most other
foreigners. Let us have ‘Australia
for Australians’. No other cry should be heard in Australia. …Then for
another phase of the question. Look how the Dago has a monopoly of fish
and oyster saloons in Sydney and other large centres. Any true ‘Cornstalk’
or ‘Pelmo’ (letter writers) must feel quite elated as he walks along Pitt
and King streets when he sees how the Dago has driven his countrymen out
of the fruit and restaurant businesses. Oh no! we want population
certainly, give us Britishers and look to our own birthrate; but
foreigners we do not want.

plantations at Mullumbimby Creek, but all succumbed to the ravages of the
bunchy top disease. With them went one of the best and oldest plantations
in the Brunswick River district, owned by the late Mr C. Kunkler... Mr
J. Kunkler now replanting in virgin scrub Mullum Crk. Recent plantings,
...notably along the Old Brunswick Heads Road, and if the industry could
be restored to anything like its old footing Mullumbimby would enjoy
prosperity similar to that which it had when the banana 'boom' was on.

8Oct30: …..first time in history of the shire council the limit of
overdraft on the general fund had been reached, and the bank had requested
that no further payments be made until additional funds came to hand. The
limit of overdraft allowed by law is £14,417… Considerable amounts are due
to the council by the Local Government Department and the
Main Road Board, but unless
these amounts are received there will be no funds to pay the wages of
officials and employees next pay day…
23Oct30:
Main Roads Board notified
(Byron Shire)
that through a reduction in revenue a readjustment in the rate of
expenditure had been compelled. …But clerk (Mr R. Brownell) stated that
since his report to the president, the limit of the overdraft on the
general fund had been reached, £4432/3/1 had been received, comprising
£2625 subsidy, £900 from the Main Roads Board, and £600 from the
Unemployment Relief Council. Payment of accounts totalling £2654/13/10
would leave the overdraft at £14,958.
There was still £2000
due from the Main Roads Board, £3000 represented arrears in rates, and
£2000 current outstanding rates.
6Nov30: New Byron Shire
valuations by Valuer-General
reduced from £2,012,729 to £1,762,770, a total decrease of £250,159. The
reduction of this amount at 2d in the £ will result in a decrease of rate
revenue of £2084/13/2 on the general fund, and at
½d on the loan rate, a decrease
of £541/3/3, being a total decrease of £2625/16/5, apart from the
reduction in the rate for street lighting.
20Nov30: …Nearly all the men (entire Council work force?) are
working on the relief job at Cooper’s Creek, the cletracs will all finish
up by the end of the present week as no new work has been finalised with
the Main Roads Board. The concrete crossings on Main Arm will absorb the
cletrac men but this work will be completed before Christmas. …My
suggestion is that one scheme be sent along to the Unemployment Economic
Council with a second one in two weeks’ time, and the third one a month
later. The council has gone properly into the matter of relief works, and
as the other works finish up, unless money is forthcoming, unemployment
will be very acute. All works in hand will finish up at the end of the
year including the relief work where 50 men are employed. This will leave
approximately 70 men out of employment at the beginning of the year.
19Dec30: Mullum Stats. 323 registered

Big increase due resurgent banana industry? + Huonbrook residents give

£30,000

10Feb31: Record flood.
Various landslips
occurred on roads in the Byron Shire....At Huonbrook there is a slip on
the new deviation. Much of the metal put down by the unemployment relief
gang on the Huonbrook road has been washed out. At Wilson's Creek damage
has been done to the approaches to the concrete crossing. The approaches
were in course of construction. No cream has been delivered from the top
end of Wilson's Creek since Monday last..
12Mar31: Byron Council.
The relief work at Cooper's
Creek stood up exceptionally well, on of the 36in pipe culverts choked
with the result that some of the filling was washed away. The worst
trouble was slips which came down all the way along the road and a big one
on the deviation. Removing slips and filling up places on the deviation
where the road had sunk can be done for
£45, especially if the
local residents give some help to load. +
consideration of
repairing two miles of road from Mullum turnoff at the race-course to
Laverty's Gap.

7Oct33:
21.9% reduction in ucv Byron, from
£1,762,570 to £1,376,693
(-£386,000). Bruns one of biggest falls from £42,499 to £26,416 (37.8%).
Presents serious problem for Shire, as they will have to decide whether
they can carry on with such a cut in funds, or whether rates will have to
be raised.
9Oct33: Editorial NS. The
farmers of Byron have pointed out on many occasions that wages and
interest charges have been reduced and taxation has been more recently
lowered, and claim that there should be a corresponding reduction in
rates. Their strongest argument is the reduced earning power of farm land
because of the fall in prices... Thus the owners who advocate lower rates
claim that councils must manage on smaller incomes. ... at the same
time calling for more and better roads.
13Oct33: Byron Shire, while appreciating farmer's difficulties, decide to
take action on rate arrears. Outstanding rates = £7100,
of which £3400 is accumulated arrears of previous years.
18Oct33: Byron Council
already asked for
£2500 from unemployment relief
council for electric
light Bruns.
25Oct33:
Byron Shire President says It is apparent that we will have to cease
all other than subsidised work, after presentation of finances by
Shire Clerk. After today the
overdraft will be
£11,319, and the limit of overdraft allowed by law is £10,345, so that the
limit will be exceeded by £974. Outstanding rates for
1933 are £3159, and previous
year £4203. Amount due from Unemployment Relief Council is £783, and the
amount
due from the work-for-the-dole scheme
is £166, and from the Main Roads Board £600, making total of £8911.
25Oct33: Goonengerry
residents compromise by offering to work on Mill Rd if council pay for
materials.
26Oct33: Fixing Byron
1934 rates at the same
rate as 1933 will result in a reduction of revenue of
£3215. Council had progressively been reducing rates since 1931, giving a
cumulative income
loss of £9000.
6Dec33:
Byron estimates for 1934 approved. General rate of 2d in £ ucv to stay the
same. Main Roads Board allocation to drop by £750. In 1930 revenue was
£16,546 from rates. Reduction in ucv 1931 gave revenue of £14,455. In 1930
Govt subsidy was £5250, reduced to £3000 in 1931. At same general rate for
1934 will give revenue from rates of £11,472
