It will be impossible to expel the fathers or to check the increase of the children. The races who now inhabit the land will be obscured or ousted by their inferiors, who grow rapidly on a new soil. Lismore Chronicle:

Worked on father’s vineyards at NI and made 600galls/yr. About a dozen other vineyards at the place – ‘that was all the colony was fit for’-  Married. Wanted to retail father’s wines. Lots of objections by locals and application refused.

16Mar06: Carlo Franceschi. Soap suds on premises.
16Nov06: Dr Silvio Monti of Broadwater. Imported labour. 50 Italians by CSR.

11/12/19Mar07: Fire. Angelo Iveli burnt out. 4 other shops Woodlark St. Iveli and wife and child awakened just in time by boy named Mario who lives with them. Got out with the clothes they wore. Mario only a few years ago had a narrow escape from incineration on an adjoining premises.
[2Mar07 Northern Star: Column by Noogoora Burr: What are we coming to? We drive out the kanaka boy to bring in a horde of Italians. Better, far better, the devil you know than the one you do not. The kanaka boy can hold his own with the most of foreigners, too. Not that any of them are desirable, but we seem to be able to bring the kanaka to a higher moral life than most aliens.
This generated a letter from ‘Pelmo’ which was seemingly modified. It was repeated in a fuller form in the Chronicle, after the Burrs unrepentant reply. Earlier the Chronicle carried a letter by ‘Cornstalk’.]
5Mar07: Truly the Noogoora Burr is responsible for some quick developments, and especially so, when he attacks the empty cranium of the cheap Black Labor advocate, as exemplified in a paragraph appearing in Saturday’s issue of the Northern Star, in which a burry one runs to seed in applause of the departing Kanaka boys and draws odious comparisons between the wolly parson-eater and one of the most intelligent and progressive European nations. Of course the Kanaka boys’ excellence in the art of cooking and dispatching yams and missionaries is universally agreed upon. But with those exceptions Tommy Tanna’s assistance in the science and civilization of the world is trifling indeed to some of the illustrious Italians
Italy can boast of. Surely the Burr’s are not to thick and green even in the rank cane-fields to be ignorant of the value of the Italian element even in this town and district, in the profession of medicine, as agriculturists, and in business pursuits…..signed Cornstalk.
[16Mar07 Northern Star: The Burr replies: ‘Pelmo’ having the manners to come to the paper from whence emanated ‘the malicious calumny’, the ‘slanderous libeler’ will give him a few words in reply. Before reading further it would tend to lighten my task if ‘Pelmo’ would take himself unto the tap, put his head under it and let the water ripple around his braincase until what is inside is cooled and in fit condition to use with reasonable care. Then follows an explanation of how Pelmo twisted his words.  ….the kanaka is not any more undesirable than most other foreigners. Let us have ‘
Australia for the Australians’, no other cry should be heard in Australia.
Then for another phase of the question. Look how the Dago has a monopoly of fish and oyster saloons in Sydney and other large centres. Any true ‘Cornstalk’ or ‘Pelmo’ must get quite elated as he sees how the Dago has driven his countrymen out of the fruit and restaurant businesses. Oh no! we want population certainly, give us Britishers and look to our own birthrate; but foreigners we do not want.
19Mar07: Will you please publish this answer to a few lines that appeared in the Northern Star of March 2nd, and written by ‘Noogoora Burr’…… There are some very wise individuals who think Kanakas morally superior to aliens (read Continentals). There must be some fools of politicians in the Commonwealth Government to block the Asiatics and open the Australian doors to Europeans, while the first are preferable to the others. It is a pity that there are not many wise men like ‘Noogoora Burr’, to stop Continental immigration, and populate Australia with Japanese, Chinese, and Kanakas. I am sure that the above gentleman, for one, would find himself more at home amongst Chinese and Kanakas. But when the same gentleman hinted that Kanakas are morally superior than most aliens (of course, he alluded to Italians especially), he showed to possess a crass ignorance of foreigners, or else he made such a statement with a villainous malice. There are something like eighty Italian families on the Richmond River, including four doctors. Most of these families came to the Richmond in 1884, and to my knowledge they are – and always were – law-abiding people. There never was amongst them one for the criminal court yet. …. Signed Pelmo.

17Nov26: Foreign Colonies. Editorial. … It is very much open to question whether the practice is desirable (colonies of aliens, re Maltese). Although the Maltese are British subjects they do not belong to the British race and, as in the case of other non-British people, their value as immigrants depends upon their power to adapt themselves to the ideals of the new country in which they settle. This applies to all alien immigrants, and not to the Maltese alone, who certainly have the right to be placed on the same footing as other races. ….immigrants from some other countries, who enter the commonwealth without consulting anybody and settle in colonies wherever they please. The Italian invasion of Queensland is a case in point. There are some parts of the state which are almost wholly Italian. They are just little bits of Italy transferred to Australia, the people retaining the habits and customs of their own country and showing no disposition to conform to those of the country of their adoption. This is the strong objection to colonies of aliens. They prevent the immigrants from being absorbed into the general population and compel them to remain foreigners instead of gradually becoming Australians. Home ties will naturally always be strong with the original settlers, but the process of assimilation should be rapid in their sons and daughters. Settlement in colonies has a tendency to arrest this and that is the aspect of the case which requires consideration from those who desire to perpetuate British traditions in Australia.
Environment exercises a powerful influence on human beings. The son of a foreigner who plays with Australian children, goes to school with them, and enters the workshops and labours amongst Australian youths and workmen, cannot escape from the effects of his environment. Unconsciously he absorbs the Australian outlook, with very small modification due to national characteristics, and will ultimately become as good an Australian as those of British stock. Another generation will make transformation complete. Many of the names which figured in the list of those who died for the Empire in the war supply convincing testimony that the descendants of foreigners who settled in Australia years ago had nothing foreign left about them but their names. That will inevitably be the case when immigrations of other races become part of the general population. They cannot retain the habits and customs of their own people, and have to adapt themselves to the conditions of those amongst whom they live and work. This safeguard to immigration disappears if foreign colonies are established. The tendency then is to prevent the absorption of the Australian outlook. The children are brought up in a foreign environment and enmities are encouraged which are not desirable. For example, the settlers in an Italian colony will remain Italian in thought and habits, although they live in Australia. They will not become Australian citizens of Italian origin, the transformation which is necessary to mitigate the otherwise objectionable features of alien migration. That is an excellent reason why the establishment of foreign colonies in the Commonwealth should be discouraged as much as possible.

31Mar28: Australian Interests. Editorial. ‘Reds’. White Australia. ‘In a reference to the White Australia policy, Mr Hughes said that Italians are coming into Australia at the rate of 300 a month and argued that a stop should be put to the wholesale immigration of this description. It is for us to say who shall come in and who shall not come in…’I say nothing whatever about any nation but this bit of earth belongs to us’, he quite rightly observes.’
On the other hand, it is only fair to point out that some Italian immigrants, so far as the Richmond district’s experience is concerned at any rate, are of an industrious class. We have Italians on the land in this district who have made good and are worthy neighbours. Perhaps we have been lucky in securing a better class of the Italian immigrant in our midst than those who are taking up their abode in other districts. Nevertheless….Italians arriving at rate of 300 per month was wrong.
31Mar28: W.M. Hughes accused of the rankest perfidy. His speech on White Australia.
…At the Nationalist Association conference today the chairman (Mr Farrah) read a letter from Mr Bruce deploring the speech of Mr Hughes before the conference…. Sir Neville Howse then addressed the conference….. ‘The people who have been insulted by being referred to as ‘dagoes’ are the same people who, during the war time, stood by us and who made possible our security in the Mediterranean. Mr Hughes has offered them the greatest insult that could be offered…..
At this stage Mr Hughes appeared on the platform, whereupon the whole conference burst into cheers. ….
The New South Wales Chief Secretary (Mr Bruntell) said he regretted Mr Hughe’s use of the word ‘dago’ and recalled how during the war Mr Hughes had called Italians ‘our glorious allies.’
Mr Hughes: I never used the word dago.
Mr Brundell: Then the honourable gentleman must have forgotten what he did say. That is my distinct recollection of his words. ….
Mr Hughes was loudly cheered again when he rose to speak…. It has been said that I referred to Italians as dagoes. You were here and heard me speak and applauded me to the echo. If I have sinned, you sinned with me. Was there a statement I made which was not in conformity with your ideals? The thing has been that I expressed your ideals too well… They
(Sir Neville Howse, Mr Marr) boasted that this country was 98% British, but how could that continue if 18% of the year’s annual arrivals were of Southern European origin?…..

18Mar32: Letter from L. Buongiorno of Caniaba. Italians and Crown Lands. A recent issue of the Star contained a report of certain remarks made by Cr. Arthur and Cr. Towns at a meeting of the Terania Shire Council, re Italians and the occupation of Crown lands. Kindly grant me space to reply to these gentlemen on behalf of some of the 'coloured' people in question. Cr. Towns is desirous of knowing'how these things are done', as 'these Italians' suddenly appear in possession of Crown Lands. .... With regard to Cr Arthur's reference to 'white men' perhaps if he knew a little more about the coloured men in question he would be less hasty in his remarks.... Any better class Australian who has a knowledge of the Italians will assure Cr Arthur of the truth of these statements. If fairness of complexion be a necessary qualification, then let me assure Cr Arthur that he will find in these districts many Italians much fairer than he is. I wonder would these gentlemen be prepared to undertake the propositions that some Italians are making a success of.... As one very white (and I hope loyal) Australian, I would suggest that if we wish to claim a superiority over other races, we should try and carry ourselves in such a way as to make such a claim reasonable, which we are certainly not doing if we make ridiculous and unfair statements without making ouselves thoroughly acquainted with the subject in hand...
