1913: Pop within boundaries of the Municipality of
Lismore = 7417 ‘Europeans’, 29 Chinese and 95 ‘Asians other than Chinese.’
The
Kanakas were the dominate alien group around the Richmond-Tweed until the turn
of the century when the ‘Hindoos’ gained the ascendancy, although there’s a
suspicion that many of the ‘Polynesian Half-Castes’ were classified as
‘Aboriginal Half-Castes’. Probably all 152 ‘Polynesian born’ in Co Rous in
1911 were Kanakas around the Tweed. But coincidental Police census counted
~250, implying ~100 Aust born ‘half castes.’

In 1911
there were 78m/3f Mahometans in Co Rous. The Sikhs probably included in the
122m/10f ‘Other non Christians’ (if not amongst the 7 people who gave ‘no
religion’, 156 who objected to stating religion, and 113 who didn’t specify
any religion.) The census form was not compiled by the individuals themselves
and some ‘employers’ could have designated ‘Sikhs’ as ‘Mahometans’, but even
so, still appears Muslims have made ground, perhaps to again be largest
Punjabi group Richmond-Tweed?
The enclave of 218 (204m/14f) Indian born in Rous was largest in NSW,
including Sydney. They were also the dominant group within total ‘Asia born’
Richmond-Tweed = 359 Rous and 6 Richmond. Apart from the ‘Kanakas’, around 90%
of the other ‘Asians other than Chinese’ complied by police were ‘Hindoos’
[Removing Chinese born (67) and including Polynesian born (152) gives total of
450 ‘Asians other than Chinese’]. The police census Jan1911 = 622 ‘Asians
other then Chinese’ Richmond-Tweed, implying up to 172 ‘Aust born’? Assuming
all AOTC at Cudgen (172) and Tumbulgum (51) were Kanakas, and removing
Polynesian born, gives 399 AOTC, implying up to 101 Aust born, most of whom
were Hindoos?
The Jan
1911 Police Census Richmond-Tweed shows 100 ‘Chinese’. Four mths later the
Commonwealth census shows 67 ‘China born’.
Aust born ‘half castes’ possibly included in extra 33. Other Asians Rous includes 10 Japanese, 4 Philippineos, 1 Javanese, 1
Hong Kong born, and 2 ‘others’. Could be that Police lumped Japanese and others
with Chinese. Co Rous had 4m Confucians and 14m/1f Buddhists, but 64m/1f
China born. Other Chinese probably
included in the 132 ‘Other non-Christians’ along with Sikhs and others.
